Comfrey

Symphytum officinale

10 seeds

This plant is used extensively in permaculture as it makes an excellent organic fertiliser and its deep root system brings nutrients up from the subsoil where they accumulate in the leaves. The leaves are especially high in potassium and adding leaves to a compost mound will 'activate' the compost into breaking down. Leaves can also be added with water to make a liquid fertiliser. Comfrey mulch and potting mix can also be made. Hardy Perennial.

Cold Scarification required - plant in Autumn or Winter and seeds will germinate in Spring /or plant in punnets, moisten, cover with plastic bag and put into the fridge or freezer for 4-6 weeks. Remove to 20-24 degrees c, germination then occurs in 14-21 days. Planting Depth: 2mm
Perennial plant, goes dormant in winter and shoots again in Spring. Flowers from 2nd year onwards
